To the dumbasses who are saying "yeah, but you have this that and the other"; you need to STFU. It is a FACT that we have a building named after a racist. It needs to be changed, plain and simple. Who gives a fuck what a building at A&M is named after? That's got nothing to do with the fact that we have a dorm named after Simkins. I had no idea and I wonder if the "higher ups" at Texas did. Change the name of the stupid building and be done with it.

This is one of those existential moments in the Internet. If a Horn fan doesn't cruise Texags, then the thread doesn't exist for that person. Pretty simple.

We fucked up in honoring Simkins, but I don't like the idea of covering up history, and history is clear that Simkins was instrumental in the development of the University of Texas....for better or worse.

Those that study our history need to know that.

You can't find many references to Christianity in Washington DC anymore along these same lines and in a couple of generations, I believe that school kids will never know how important religion was to the creation of this country.

I believe that Simkins should stand as a reminder of how fucked up things were once, and how we have grown from there.

"Watergating" our history doesn't do anyone any good.....plus.....if you want to hear about how Jester, Frank Erwin and Painter were on this issue, we would have to start naming our buildings after numbers or something else.

I understand your outrage, and share it, but I don't think that you bury it.

Let it symbolize what used to be prominent and let it symbolize how far we have come.

This kind of shit has been going on all over the country for years. Like changing the name of a school from George Washington Elementary to Harriet Tubman Elementary because Washington owned slaves. If we're only going to honor perfect people then UT needs take down that statue of MLK fast. Dude did cheat on his wife, ya know. And that LBJ Library thingy.........Johnson's political career was littered with stolen elections, political corruption and lies. Where does it end?

maybe this sounds a little stupid, but what if they took a student poll? ask the students for feedback. set up a website where students can voice their opinions and vote on whether to change the name or not. these are supposed to be some of the smartest young people in the great state of texas. why not find out what they think? i know most colleges are run more like a business than a place to actually specialize in a certain field, but these students are the paying customers. maybe they should have a say in the matter.

My take.

Buildings undergo name changes quite often. He's been honored long enough, it's possibly time for a name change. The football stadium was Texas War Memorial Stadium when I was there. Now it's got about 7 words in it's name.

I'm not outraged at all, I was just trying to tell the idiots who are arguing on TA with the "I know you are, but what am I" defense to STFU. The name change was just a suggestion to avoid all of the political BS. Personally, I couldn't give two shits about that dump of a building.

ms. armykat30 lived at the castillion. that place was an epic shithole for something that costs so much. also, that little alley way behind the building was a fucking noise funnel for the 6 a.m. garbage truck. i think the guy driving that thing was doing everything in his power to wake up everyone in the building.

yeah, but I lived in it when it was new. (relatively, they had just re-modeled the 12th and 13th floors before my arrival, and I lived in 1207)

And I lived on the west side, so, all I had was the Phi Delt house and the late night fajita stand noise to worry about.

ya, she lived with the head RA or whatever they are called. they had one of the "nicer" rooms, and the RA thought she was doing my gf a favor. the unit had one, giant bedroom with a walk in closet, and the other bedroom was barely big enough for a desk and twin sized bed and a hole in the wall for a closet. they also had a "mini kitchen". in reality, it was a two burner stove, one of which didn't work, and full size fridge, which was nice, and a sink that had no hot water, and got clogged when you left the water on too long. absolute shithole. they were also doing some kind of construction to the east side of the building. i think they told us they were repainting the place with some kind of special paint that kind of acts like window tinting. whatever they were doing, it was not painting. hammers, in general, are not used whilst painting.
