The Longhorns have plenty of pitching.
In fact, Texas coach Augie Garrido said Tuesday that this pitching staff was the “best one” in his 42 years of coaching.
And he didn’t hesitate when he said it.
Well, it’s true,” he said.
That being said, what makes it the best staff might not be the five known workhorses, who are Taylor Jungmann, Brandon Workman, Cole Green, Austin Dicharry and new closer Chance Ruffin.
It’s the other guys who complete the staff.
Stayton Thomas, who came on at the end of last year and ended up 4-0 with a 2.11 ERA, will be the stopper.
“Early in the season I’m not going to allow our starting pitchers to go more than five or six innings,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said. “So we need to have people to get work the sixth, seventh and possibly the eighth to get to Ruffin.”
The Longhorns also have left-hander Andrew McKirahan, who hasn’t allowed an earned run in games this preseason. Sam Stafford, another left-hander, has “some of the best stuff” on the team.
And don’t forget about Kendal Carrillo.
Everybody’s favorite walk-on from last season supposedly has developed a nasty breaking ball.
“It’s up there with Dicharry’s breaking ball,” Garrido said.
And that’s saying something.
Dicharry, according to two scouts and a former MLB player, has a major league breaking ball

DALLAS -- Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido was sentenced Thursday to four days in jail for a drunken driving conviction, though he might not serve any time.
Garrido
Garrido's attorney, Michael Burnett, said Travis County jail officials will decide how long to keep the winningest coach in Division I after he reports sometime before Aug. 15. Burnett said the 70-year-old Garrido received two days' credit when he was arrested and could earn the other two days simply by getting processed.
