I would assume that if he sits out this year, he would be lucky to sign next year for half of whatever the 49ers highest offer has been.

the thing i don't understand is that he would be willing to go back into the draft, in which i don't think he would be drafted as high due to a perceived attitude he might have. plus, aside from him, the draft was kinda wr weak this year. next year he won't be considered #1 with guys like dez bryant coming out, plus he'll lose somewhere b/t 5-10 million this year, and even more when his draft ranking plummets

Let's not forget Damian Williams and Ryan Broyles along with Bryant next season.
To answer the question, Crabtree and his agent, Eugene Parker, have softened their stance from "top 3 money because Mel Kiper said I should have been top 3" to Heyward-Bey money (No. 7 pick).
There's some history here between Parker and the 49ers that hasn't gotten much press, if any. Parker negotiated a huge deal for Deion Sanders with the 49ers (at the time, the most money ever given to a defensive back). A large part of it was a deferred signing bonus. The NFL later enacted the "Deion Rule" which prevents rookies from deferring the majority of their salaries in favor of a signing bonus. The 49ers were called the kings of salary cap circumvention back then, and Parker was every bit as shrewd. (Parker later got Larry Fitzgerald the biggest contract for a rookie wide receiver in league history.
The reason I give that background is you have to know what Parker's motivation is. Parker wants to bust through slot money with Crabtree....the same way Boras does with MLB players. For the most part, the NFL teams have resisted doing that, and given the beating the 49ers have taken from Parker over the years, they have effectively dug in their heels. There is a ton of leaguewide pressure on the 49ers to hold strong here. But now...Parker has created a situation where there's a lot of pressure on him too. Parker has even said clearly a deal would not be reached before September.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY this deal doesn't get done. He's stupid, but he's not that stupid. They have already softened their stance that he "may sit out the season."
My guess is a deal gets done the day of the Cowboys/Niners game (this Friday?).
Out of the 49ers' original $4.1 million rookie pool, the club has about $1.825 million remaining. That means Crabtree's rookie cap figure can be no larger than $1.825 million. Obviously, that's not a big concern for either side. It's all about guaranteed money.
What have the 49ers offered? Only Crabs, Parker and the Niners know. Jerod Mayo, last year's #10 pick, signed for 5 years, 18.9 million, including 13.8 million in bonuses and guaranteed money. Heyward-Bey's deal guarantees him 23.5 million (7.65 million per year on average). That's what Crabtree wants. My guess is the Niners have offered him a 5 year deal worth about 6 mil per year on average.
See if I'm right about Friday being the day.

An analogy Doc can relate to.
You graduate from Tech and go to an industry job fair with 30 or so possible employers. After the first 9 grads get job offers, you and 3 others are fighting for the tenth offer. PapaJohns offers you a job. Dominos offers a guy a job. Then the number 12 guy gets an offer from Pizza Hut. The guy who got offered from Pizza Hut signs for $11.50 an hour plus tips. The guy from Dominos signs for $10/hr plus tips. Papa Johns offers you $10.50/hr plus tips. You don't sign because the Pizza Hut guy got an offer later, but is making more than you. You pout around for months, living off of a high interest loan you took out because you were sure you'd get $12-$13/hour. Meanwhile, the pizza Hut guy is living the life. Making deliveries in his brand new Chevy Cobalt and buying new clothes at the Clearance rack at Old Navy.
Who looks dumb here?
