does not surprise me. my dad lives up there now (just moved there about 5 years ago), and he works in real estate. he travels to some of the worst parts of the city. from the way he describes it, it's like some third world country. my stepmom has lived in that area all her life. the stories she tells are downright awful. it seems more dangerous to go there than to some places in the middle east.

according to my dad, there's been an exodus of people from detroit that are moving to the suburbs. and now the suburbs are being taken over and going downhill as well.

on a more serious note: it is a damn shame what's going on up there on the lakes. from buffalo all the way around to chicago is a fucking wreck now. that part of the country used to be amongst the cream of the crop, same with the rust belt on the Ohio too. my uncle tells stories about how fucking good he had it in the steel mills. that place was boom town, now you go through there (rust belt) and in some places, the local government can't afford traffic lights and signs so they use plywood and spray paint 'stop' on them to use as stop signs. youngstown, east liverpool, wellsville, wheeling etc. have been like what detroit and cleveland are going through for a long time. hopefully, coal will take off again and that place will be jumping again. my mom says almost the entire county she grew up in is on permanent wellfare since the steel collaspe

That's what happens when governments tax the shit out of people and never, ever cut spending. People leave and let the govt. go broke.

It's happening in Kalifornia, and may be coming soon to a federal government near you.

If y'all aren't paying attention to all the tax schemes that are being floated out there right now, it is some scary shit. Our grandchildren will have a hard time believing the U.S. was ever as good a place as it is right now unless someone gets some sense in Washington real fucking soon.

I think you mean, thanks Congress. It isn't just a single party that's put us into this position.

Someone, I don't remember who, made a proposal a few years ago that would be a sure-fire way to keep taxes and spending low. You simply do away with taxes being withheld from your check each month; in other words you write the IRS a check on April 15 for all your federal taxes and withholding for the year. Then the true scope of the tax burden would be felt and people might well go after their local politicians with pitchforks.

The govt would go bankrupt in a year. People can't pay their credit card bills, what makes you think they're gonna have an extra few thousand lying around on April 15th?

I wonder if Texas will get another round of mass migration from that area. I can remember in the early 80s all the new kids from Michigan coming to Texas because it the job market up there went to shit.

i wish people couldn't get taxes deducted from their paychecks. i had to pay every year at the end of the year and it taught me how to save. it wasn't easy, but it was a lesson learned. of course, it would be almost impossible to do this now for everyone. there would be so many defaults on loans this country would absolutely collapse worse than it is now

I actually attended an TSCPA conference a couple of weeks ago and a gentleman from the City of Arlington spoke.

Evidently the City of Arlington is one of the most conservatively ran cities in the nation. Recently, due to all of the activity with the Barnett shell (spelling?) Arlington leased a lot of it's public lands for drilling purposes.

To make a long story short this guy and a few others decided that while the proceeds from these leases would be extensive and finite they would still be finite. They felt that the proceeds from these leases belonged not only to the current citizens of Arlington but all future citizens of Arlington. As a result they started a foundation with which the proceeds would be deposited, established a conservative investment plan for the foundation and a purpose. The income will be used purely for the benefit of the citizens of Arlington.

I was very impressed with this one politician's view point. Most non-profit/governmental agencies have a "spend it now" mindset and dont really think about the future. As a result you find cities in a mess. I wish that more politicians had this view point and understood they had a duty not only to the citizens of today but the citizens of the future.

I've actually heard something similar with regards to financial planning. Essentially they idea is that it's better to have to pay in on April 15th because if you are receiving a return then you've been giving the US government an interest free loan all year. Of course this was developed under the assumption that even a basic savings account beat inflation. Now when your savings account only pays .5% what's the freaking point.
