Deserved every flipping award it got. I just watched it. I'm sure this has been addressed and I'm too danged lazy to go find the thread.

THAT was an awesome movie.

except for The Wrestler, yea it didn't have much competition. Both great movies and would have done well in good movie years.

It would have done well, yes. But not 8 awards well.

Argue about the awards all you want, but its a high quality movie with a great story that shows what that part of the world is really like. I dont know how many of you have been to India but its horridly sad how most of that country lives. This movie did a better job of capturing that than anything I have ever seen and everyone should have to watch this thing at some point as its a little bit of a wake up call to how great life really is in this country.

I "adopted" 3 Dalit kids through Dalit Freedom Network. If you've never read about the plight of the Dalits, you should check it out. It's disgusting.

I thought Benjamin Button was good. The Wrestler was good, but to me, it was only good because of the acting and Marisa Tomei's titties. I didn't think it had enough of a plot to win Best Picture.

Slumdog was very, very good and deserved the award. Benjamin Button was a close second.

The Reader wasn't even tolerable for five minutes in. Frost/Nixon = boring. Milk...we'll have to let someone else review that one. It violates 2 of my 3 rules about what movies I'll see. (1) It has Sean Penn; (2) It has the gays. If they could have somehow worked another fucking movie about Queen Elizabeth or the British royalty into it, we would've had the hat trick.

Sean Penn is brilliant in Mystic River. I agree though that I am very wary of watching movies with him anymore.

it's so unfortunate sean penn has to be such an outspoken dumbfuck piece of shit liberal because he is a brilliant actor. he has been placed in my top 5 least favorite people in this country along with pelosi, ted kennedy, barney fag, and my ex girlfriend

If you listen to any Christian music, the group Caedmon's Call has a couple of songs about the Dalits.

The group does mission work in India with them. I talked with a couple of them once and they are very concerned about the awful conditions the Dalits live in.

The problem with Gran Torino was getting around the acting by the Asians. Putting Eastwood aside, that was the single worst cast movie of all time.

I didnt think Gran Torino was spectacular by any stretch. It was actually fairly mediocre, but I thought the same of Million Dollar Baby (and I am a Morgan Freeman fan, see Seven) which won best pic in a god awful movie year ('05). Hotel Rwanda was prob the best movie of that year and didnt win anything and only got nominated for 3 awards. Further proof that the awards dont mean shit, we all know a good movie when we see it.

On second thought, The Aviator was the best picture that year. I realize it was horrendously long, but it was meant to be an epic and thats how it was made.

I thought Million Dollar baby was pretty damn good. Most of Eastwood's flicks are good. Gran Torino was on the lower end of that. Most folks loved it because of the names he called everyone he came across and his scowls and growls. While funny, the acting of the characters "Toad" and "Sue" was so fucking bad, it was laughable by itself.
