My new place is wired througout with Cat 8 cabling with hook ups in each room. There is a central switch down near the breaker box. If I were to get cable internet, could I hook up the modem at the central switch and then connect multiple computers throughout the house just by plugging into a jack? Or do I need a separate modem for each computer?

Oh yeah...also, my house doesn't have a single standard sized phone jack. Can you run a phone line off of a Cat 8 connection?

wireless if fine if all you have are laptops...plugging into a jack is usually faster too.

If you know so much, why are you asking us?

Does that mean I don't need a modem? Or does that double as a modem?

You need a modem, then a router.

You can get a combo router/modem. That's what I have.

Ask your provider what available.

If your house is wired and already has a switch, then all you need is a modem. Plug the modem in to the switch and then plug your computers in to the jacks.

you will need a modem if you are running cable internet

cable in > modem > cable from modem to input slot of switch > wall ports to switch

do you know what kind of switch it is? big difference between that and a router

to the wireless comment...wireless is significantly lagging behind cable tech right now. avoid wireless if you can but its decent if you need for mobile connectivity. N will help but its still a little expensive for the average person right now.

in asia and giving tech advice...imagine that. later guys.
